The Žďárské vrchy Hills Protected Landscape Area (PLA) located in the Districts of Žďár nad Sázavou, Havlíčkův Brod, Chrudim and Svitavy was declared on the territory of 709 km²in 1970. Its elevation ranges between 490 and 836.3 m a.s.l., the latter being Mt. Devět skal/Nine Rocks, the highest peak of the area. The PLAs administration managing nature and the landscape administration is based at Žďár nad Sázavou.

Since 2001, the Cave Administration of the Czech Republic has been in charge of managing a speleologically and geologically unique site, the so-called Jeskyně pod Sněžníkem Caves. It is a system of pseudokarst hollows discovered by fluorite mining at the Jílové–Sněžník deposit near the town of Děčín (northern Bohemia).

Within the OPE, the ANCLP CR has applied for funds to be spent for the conservation measures, amounting 650 million CZK (26.3 million euros) and is going to apply for other projects, totalling 515 million CZK (20.9 million euros).

The article deals with semi-natural stream regulations in human sett­lement residential areas as well as with their importance in flood control. It focuses on the experience raised in the Czech Republic, in comparison to the measures taken in other European countries, particularly in the Federal Republic of Germany (Bavaria).

Populations of endangered fen-moss: Threeranked Hump-moss (Meesia triquetra), Tufted Fen-moss (Paludella squarrosa), Blandow’s Bog-moss (Helodium blandowii) and Rusty Hook-moss (Scorpidiumscorpioides) were studied. The recent localities of studied species were visited during years 2009 and 2010. Threeranked Hump-moss is only at four localities (Chvojnov, Louky u Černého lesa, Odměny u rybníka Svět a Šimanovské rašeliniště), populations of Threeranked Hump-moss consist of a very few stems. ...

The Damned (Prokletije) Mts., a mountain range in the Balkans that extends from northern Albania to southwestern Kosovo and eastern Montenegro, is no doubt among European areas to the smallest extent influenced by humans. Visitors have only recently discovered its beauty, but it is just a matter of time where also the forgotten part of the Balkans will be dramatically changed. Nevertheless, the landscape is being used in the same way as dozens or probably centuries ago, i.e.by livestock grazing. Small field patches very closed to human settlements provide local inhabitants with basic food. At more remote sites, grazing has been irregular and the landscape has been relatively well healthy. While a botanist meets species-rich plant communities and wild plant populations which cannot be found elsewhere in Europe, forests as well as fauna have been preserved in a rather worse status there. The remnants of forests are mostly beech ones, somewhere with hornbeam, spruce or pine trees. They have been managed as coppice or sucker growths: therefore, also because of broken forest edges, many passerines and other small birds nest in such habitats. The Damned Mountains harbours many endemic or relict wildlife species (e.g., the alpine plant Wulfenia baldaccii)or those considered being critically threatened across the whole continent.

The Operational Programme “Environment” (OPE) for the period 2007–2013 is funded from the European Community’s budget and co-financed from national sources. It supports various building and non-building environmental measures. The OPE includes eight priority areas (so-called axes) aiming at individual components of the environment.
