The Žďárské vrchy Hills after Forty Years
The Žďárské vrchy Hills Protected Landscape Area (PLA) located in the Districts of Žďár nad Sázavou, Havlíčkův Brod, Chrudim and Svitavy was declared on the territory of 709 km2in 1970. Its elevation ranges between 490 and 836.3 m a.s.l., the latter being Mt. Devět skal/Nine Rocks, the highest peak of the area. The PLAs administration managing nature and the landscape administration is based at Žďár nad Sázavou.

The PLA mission is to maintain harmonic well-balanced cultural landscape with a significant proportion of natural ecosystems. In the PLA, the landscape scenery/character has been shaped since colonising the boundary primary forest and it is a mixture of fields and meadows with dispersed trees under the Žďárské vrchy Hills forested ranges. The landscape also harbours picturesque fish ponds and rural settlements with the Horák/Highlander folk architecture elements. Water is an important phenomenon within the PLA.
The Žďárské vrchy Hills is a headstream on the main European interstream divide line between the North and Black Seas. On dense network of small watercourses, an extensive fishpond system has been established since the Middle Ages. The PLAs most valuable parts include particularly peat-bogs and other wetland communities. Gneiss rock forms on forested Žďárské vrchy Hills ranges as well as a mosaic of dispersed woody plant vegetation with hedgerows and small stone walls in farmland are another regions characteristic landscape element.
The PLA Administrations main tasks include management of the most valuable areas, i.e. 50 small-size Specially Protected Areas and the 1st, the most strictly protected zone, as well as of veteran trees, carrying out the public/state administration in nature conservation and landscape protection, monitoring the remarkable natural features within the PLA and communication, education and public awareness.
On the occasion of the 40thanniversary of the establishing the PLA, the Administration has prepared about a dozens of events for the general public and the target groups, e.g. Babín educational trail restoration, a trip to Mt. Žákova hora, a launching the stamp presenting the Žďárské vrchy Hills, a mushroom exhibition or a commemorative planting a descendant of the biggest tree, namely of Lukas or Singing Lime Tree.
