Chobot K.: Red Lists: The State of the Art Report

author: Karel Chobot

Red Lists of threatened species are a respected source of information on the threat status of animal, plant and fungal species. They analyse the extinction risk of species, applying the standard categories and criteria. Mainly due to available detailed knowledge of fauna and flora, national Red Lists have been published for almost all groups of organisms in the Czech Republic.

Nevertheless, the documentation of the individual species assessment is not perfect, because the publications do not provide the criteria applied within an assessment. The slightly modified International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria were used for some taxa or groups. Thus, the approach makes comparison with other national Red Lists quite difficult. Sweden displays an outstanding example how to develop and publish national Red Lists: they regularly appear in five-year intervals. A new series of the European/European Union Red Lists of the selected wild plant and animal groups is another example of the well-documented assessments of species extinction risk. At present, there is a need to update the Red Lists in the Czech Republic and the State Nature Conservancy, the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic in a particular, should play a more leading role as a national coordinator of the process and a permanent publisher of such important documents.
