The Glacier National Park

The author does not describe beauties of the Yellowstone or Yosemite NP in the western part of the U.S.A., but takes readers to the Sun in the Glacier National Park in Montana. In 1932, both the Glacier National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park were declared as the worlds first International Peace Park under the name Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

The designation celebrates the longstanding peace and friendship between Canada and the U.S.A. In 1995, both the Glacier and Waterton Lakes NPs have were designated as UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the U.S. side, the Glacier NP, established on May 11, 1910, to preserve and protect the natural and cultural resources for future generations, covers over than 404,686 hectares of forests, alpine meadows, and lakes. Its diverse habitats harbour over 70 mammalian species (the most famous Grizzly Bear in total number of 350), more than 260 bird species and at least 1,200 vascular plant species. The spectacular glaciated landscape with all typical glacier features such as “U” shape valleys and mountain ranges is a hikers paradise providing them with 730 miles of maintained trails that lead deeply into one of the largest intact ecosystems in the lower 48 states. National Park management has been always connected with natural processes such as fires and flooding. Glacier melting has been a serious problem there. The Crown of the Continent is supposed to maintain the best preserved natural ecosystems of the temperate zone in the world. Going-to-the-Sun is the name of the road which takes you from sunny prairies up to snowy mountains. It was build from 1921 to 1932 and it is 87 km long. In the 19thcentury there were more than 150 glaciers, today of them, only 25 have left there. According to the most pessimistic scenario, in 2030 they can totally disappear. Therefore, do not miss the opportunity to visit the Glacier National Park and touch the Sun.
