The Great Bustard – An Aged Nature Conservation Problem in the Czech Republic

The Great Bustard (Otis tarda) is a critically endangered species of the Czech Republic fauna.

In 2005, the Action Plan/Recovery Programme for the bird species was developed by experts supervised by the Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection of the Czech Republic. Nevertheless, it has not been approved by the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic. The article briefly presents main bio logical/ecological background of the above document, analyses causes of the species decline in most of its distribution range and comments proposed measures. It also discusses the reasons why the Action Plan/Recovery Programme has not been approved yet and proposed the ways forward.
