Monitoring and Research in the Krkonoše/Giant Mts. National Park

A new scheme of monitoring and research for the next decade is presented for the oldest national park in the Czech Republic – the Krkonoše/Giant Mts. NP situated in NE Bohemia, where the first truly scientific activities started already more than 200 years ago.

Altogether ten main goals are specified, covering the most valuable natural phenomena (both biotic and abiotic), their current state and long--term trends, incl. their drivers, and supporting planning and decision -making by the NP Administration, incl. coordination and cooperation, data management and presentation. Five priority pillars are stressed: (1) Man and Krkonoše, supporting knowledge of visitation in and admittance to the region, anthropogenic impacts, socio-economic parameters, etc.; (2) Krkonoše forests and meadows, devoting to the most important habitats in the mountain range, their long-term development and suitable management; (3) Krkonoše species, dealing with the most endangered wild plant and animal species, incl. the indicator taxa, endemic and Natura 2000 species; (4) Krkonoše tundra, covering a unique phenomenon of the mountains – an isolated island of the arctic-alpine tundra in Central Europe; and (5) Climate change, contributing to the knowledge of global change impacts on mountain ecosystems.
