Invertebrate Inhabitants of Caves in the Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, special attention has been recently paid to biospeleology (cave biology).

In collaboration with the Academy of Sciences (the Institute of Entomology and Institute of Soil Biology České Budějovice/Budweis), the Cave Administration of the Czech Republic has been following up with the first surveys made by Wankel and Absolon at the turn of the 20th century. The article deals not only with the basic overview of underground fauna, but also with the specific cave habitat. The most significant invertebrates found in the Czech Republic are also described there, e.g. troglobiont springtails (Collembola) Arrhopalites ruseki, Onychiurus rauseri and Schaefferia emucronata and the mite (Acari) Pantelozetes cavaticus. Other remarkable species or those which could be considered as glacial relics are also mentioned in the article. A specific measure for protecting cave in vertebrate po-pulations is presented, too.
