Assessment of Impacts Caused by Visitors in the Čertoryje National Nature Reserve

In 2007–2008, a project supported by the Charles University Grant Agency was carried out.

It tried to contribute to better knowledge of interlinkages between nature in the Čertoryje National Nature Reserve (Bílé Karpaty/White Carpathians Mts.) and visiting it by tourists. Within the project, the study area’s vulnerability and load were analysed. Based on the project’s outputs, it was possible to identify areas of the conflict of interests between tourism and nature conservation. They include Járkovec Brook valley and its southwestern slope, the most valuable and at the same time most vulnerable site within the study area: human trampling impacts were common there. Most of visitors (70.9 %) arrived there to watch growing rare orchids. Moreover, 61 % of them visited the NNR´s vicinity within a single day. Almost half of those visiting the site went by a car there, but 23.3 % use a sigh-seeing coach. Approx. 95 % of the tourists interviewed had been familiar with visitors´ rules before going there. Nevertheless, a lot of visitors moved outside the paths. Almost half of the visitors support opening a NNR´s central part to the public.
