Pešout P. & Pelc F.: National Park Network in the Czech Republic – A Part of Our Natural Treasure

Together with the selected National Nature Reserves and the Protected Landscape Area first zones, the National Park network harbours the most valuable parts of the preserved natural environment in the Czech Republic.

Despite lot of persisting difficulties, the National Parks have been definitely proved as an effective tool to maintain and to manage the most significant natural heritage in the country. Because the National Parks have had a record of more than twenty years under the new conditions (except of the České Švýcarsko/Bohemian Switzerland National Park, established in 2000), it is possible to analyse, assess and review the above State Nature Conservancy tool. After a detailed analysis, it is necessary to prepare, approve and implement a policy for further National Park network development in the Czech Republic, as assumed by the updated State Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection Programme as early as in 2011. Such a document should set common bases, sources, targets and instruments in this field at the national level for at least the next two decades. The National Park network would be as soon as possible completed by the Křivoklát Area National Park which has been negotiated with all the stakeholders and consequently prepared to be declared. Other ideas to establish new National Parks (the Jeseníky Mts., Jizera Mts.) or to enlarge the existing ones (e.g., České Švýcarsko/Bohemian Switzerland National Park) should be more assessed in the future.
