The Hranice Abyss from the viewpoint of geologists

authors: Jiří Otava, Milan Geršl, Josef Havíř, Ondřej Bábek, Marcel Kosina

The Hranice abyss is not only an excellent site for divers.

Its dry parts are approx. 70 m deep and the depth of water column below is certainly more than 205 m. In the article, history of geological research there is followed with the geological history, which has been described and presented for the most interesting surrounding sites. The cave has developed in the Upper Devonian limestones by hydrothermal processes. Relics of the sediments deposited during the Miocene marine transgression were found in the abyss walls and in its surroundings.

The article also deals with the structural geology – the video record made by the submarine module Hyball r.o.v. together with the surface measurements have been used to specify dips of cleavage (bedding) and to construct the section. A short review concerning the research of microbiota found in the flooded part of the abyss is presented. Finally, the results of geophysical research (the very long wave method) are also described in the article.
