Scientific Authority of the Czech Republic

Scientific Authority of the Czech Republic

Under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES, also known at the Washington Convention), each Party shall designate at least one national Scientific Authority with appropriate qualifications which shall be independent of the national Management Authority or Authorities.

The main task of CITES Scientific Authorities is to technically support Management Authorities, so that decisions made by the latter are based on scientifically sound data ensuring that trade in the wildlife species covered by CITES shall not be detrimental to the survival of those species in the wild. CITES Scientific Authorities collect and analyse data on the target species and on the effects of international trade on their populations in the wild. The Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection of the Czech Republic was designated as the Czech Republic’s CITES Scientific Authority. The Czech Republic’s CITES Scientific Authority provides the Public Administration authorities with technical/expert opinions and it also deals with other issues and matters involving the implementation of CITES.
