Jandová J. & Holá E.: The Dicranium Moss – A Rare Moss Species

By the Red List of Threatened Species in the Czech Republic (Kučera & Váňa 2005), the epiphytis moss Dicranum viride is considered as Endangered within the country.

Similarly, it is red-listed in many European countries and included in Annex II to European Unions Directive 92/43/EEC on conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora, commonly known as the Habitats Directive. The species is systematically mapped in the Czech Republic, having been recently known at 29 localities and 341 microlocalities. Totally, it covers the area of approx. 14,200 cm2. The most common host tree is the Common Beech (Fagus sylvatica) and it prefers older trees. Most often accompanying species are Hypnum andoia H. cupressiforme. The best Dicranium Moss management is nonharvesting its host species.
