The Large Saw-tailed Bush-cricket on the Jičín Meadows contra Agricultural Subsidies

Full-area mowing of meadows in the extremely unsuitable period in mid-June has almost struck a death blow to a newly found Large Saw-tailed Bush-cricket (Polysarcus denticaudus) population in the District of Jičín (eastern Bohemia). In 2007, all meadows in the region were newly mown in mid-June and at the site, only eight males stridulated pushed into narrow unmown strips along a railroad track and road ditches. A year later, the situation was similar – 12 stridulating males, dispersed across small remnant grassland patches in early June, were later reduced during mowing road ditches. Because the habitat inhabited by bush-crickets is extremely small and survey on possibly suitable sites within 20 kilometres of the site carried out in 2008 did not reveal other populations of the insect species, the status of the only known Czech population should be considered critical.
