Lamačová V. et al.: Norwegian Funds Contribution to Endangered Species Action Plans/Recovery Program

Due to limited national funds available for developing and implementing endangered species action plans/recovery programmes, the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic (MoE CR) tried to raise funds from the European Economic Area/Norwegian Financial Mechanism. For that purpose, a comprehensive project entitled “Action Plans/Recovery Programmes for Specially Protected Species” had been drafted.

From the Norwegian Funds, 0.5 million euro was raised. The project has been co-financed from the Czech Republics state budget by more than 88,000 euro. The Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection of the Czech Republic was appointed by the MoE CR to implement the project in 2008–2010. Thus, the funds from EEA/Norway grants allowed implementation of many conservation measures within the action plans/recovery programmes, both in a larger scale and those which have been rather overlooked yet. The project contributed to successful implementation of action plans/recovery programmes for seven endangered species, subspecies respectively: the Spring Gentian (Gentiana verna subsp. verna), Bohemian Sand Pink (Dianthus arenariussubsp. bohemicus), Marsh Angelica (Angelica palustris), Long-stalked Pondweed (Potamogeton praelongus), European Freshwater Pearl Mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera), European Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus citellus), also known as the European Souslik, and the Aesculapian Snake (Zamenis longissimus). Outputs of research projects on the above target taxa shall be used for further action plans/recovery programmes implementation as well as for species protection planning in the future. During the project, the final version of the Bohemian Early Gentian (Gentianella praecoxsubs. bohemica) action plan/recovery programme was also developed.
