Some Reasons Why the Common Cuckoo Was Declared as the Bird of the Year 2010 in the Czech Republic

For 2010, the Czech Society for Ornithology (CSO) declared the Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) as the Bird of the Year 2010.

For 2010, the Czech Society for Ornithology (CSO), in collaboration with some State Nature Conservancy authorities, NGO’s and the Army Forests and Farms of the Czech Republic, declared the Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) as the Bird of the Year 2010. In the Czech Republic, a population of the commonly known bird is estimated at 35,000–70,000 breeding pairs. Nevertheless, the species has been recently markedly declining in the country since the mid-1990s, probably due to agricultural intensification. Czech scientists have substantially contributed to present knowledge of co-evolutionary arm races between the Common Cockoo (the brood parasite) and its hosts.
