Prague Natural Parks Are a Quarter of a Century Old

Under Act No. 114/1992 Gazette on the Protection of Nature and the Landscape, as amended later, Natural Parks (NrPs) are established to reduce such land use, which would destroy, damage or disturb the maintained status of an area, harbouring the valuable landscape scenery/character as well as concentrated aesthetic and natural values. The article presents eleven Natural Parks situated in the Prague Metropolitan Area, and the threats they have been facing. The oldest of them, the Říčanka (401 hectares) and Botič--Milíčov (873 hectares) NrPs were declared in 1984, as the output of long-term huge efforts made by nature conservationists to preserve from a point of view of nature conservation and landscape protection valuable area against spreading building of new prefabricated housing estates on the Czech Republic capitals outskirts. The other – Draháň-Troja (478 ha), Klánovice-Čihadla (2,017 ha), Rokytka (105 ha), Hostivař-Záběhlice (372 ha), Modřany Gorge-Cholupice (1,531 ha), Radotín-Chuchle Grove (1,386 ha), St. Procopius and Daleje Valley (725 ha), Košíře-Motol (313 ha) and Šárka-Lysolaje (1,005 ha) NrPs – followed in 1990–1992. Most of the Prague Natural Parks serve as unofficial broad buffer zones for small-size Specially Protected Areas. As a network, they present Prague nature in its complexity and diversity, ranging from important sites of geology and palaeontology, rock steppes and forest-steppes, forest growths, fishponds and wetlands to old parks and gardens. In addition, the Prague Natural Parks include many cultural monuments, which have been an inseparable part of the above urban landscape.
