Framework Guidelines for Coppice-with-Standards Forest Planting

In the past, forest management forming coppice-with-standards forests was quite common, aiming at permanent production both firewood and industrial wood.

Coppice-with-standards forest management is not only suitable management for habitats where oaks dominate (e.g., Hercynian oak-hornbeam forests, mixed floodplain forests), but it also a suitable measure for conservation of a lot of specially protected wildlife species related to such habitats. Although when restoring coppice-with-standards forest management, the State Nature Conservancy pays a special attention to ecosystem functions in highly structured broad-leaved deciduous forests, timber production in coppice-with-standards forests is also important, but underestimated. The presented framework guidelines are a tool how to manage coppice-with-standard forests. The guidelines can be improved and updated according to nature conservation or forest stand planting aims and targets.
