Why the Western Capercaillie Has Been Declared in the Czech Republic as the Bird of the Year 2012?
The Czech Society for Ornithology (CSO), in collaboration with other partners including the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic, declared the Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) as the Bird of the Year 2012.
More than 90% of the Capercaillie population inhabiting the Czech Republic is harboured by the Šumava/Bohemian Forest Mts. The rest of the national population is substantially fragmented in a few mountains: some of them are inhabited by individual birds. Therefore, the only viable population of the relatively robust bird, renowned for its mating display has been preserved in the Šumava/Bohemain Forest Mts. National Park. Consequently, the Capercaillie survival in the Czech Republic strongly depends on nature management in the largest Central European forest.
