Mountain Climbing – Seeking for Balance with Nature

Mountain climbing has had a long tradition in what is now the Czech Republic. Most of the important mountain climbing areas including rock terrains have become Specially Protected Areas.

Possible negative affects of mountain climbing on nature and the landscape, e.g. damaging rock surfaces and vegetation by climbing itself, destructing natural rock surfaces, trampling in the vicinity of the rocks and on accessing trails and footpaths, erosion, disturbance of animals in their natural habitats or changes in natural rock shape by locating means for climbers´ fixing can be solved under the Act No. 114/1992 Gazette on the Protection of Nature and the Landscape, as amended later, in co-operation with the Czech Mountain Climber's´ Union, which brings together most of mountain climbers in the Czech Republic, as well as with local authorities. The State Nature Conservancy in the Czech

Republic considers mountain climbing as a legitimate activity of considerable part of the active general public and at present it seeks for the balance between qualitative changes in mountain climbing and nature conservation as the clearly defined public interest.
