Pavel V.: Johann Gregor Mendel Czech Antarctic Station. In the Land of Stones and Cold Sun

In 2006, building the first Czech scientific base in Antarctica was finished on the James Ross Island.
The Johann Gregor Mendel Station is located on free-ice land on the Prince Gustav Channel coast, in a less studied area south-east of the Antarctic Peninsula. The climate is strongly influenced by the cold Weddell Sea as well as the central Antarctic climate there. The station is managed by the Masaryk University Brno and can provide up to 15 researchers with comfort facilities. In addition, to other scientific activities, basic ornithological research aimed at surveying and mapping bird populations and at studies on nesting biology in the most common bird species, the Antarctic Stern (Sterna vittata), was conducted there in 2008–2011. By establishing its own research station in Antarctica, the Czech science had become less dependent on foreign polar infrastructures (unfortunately, the dependence has been continuing in transport). Thus, the new station makes really systematic scientific activities in the by this time less studied area possible.
