How Was the Fourth World Conservation Congress

The Fourth World Conservation Congress was held in Barcelona 5-14 October 2008 and was organised by IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

IUCN is the world’s oldest and largest global environment network, putting together 84 governments, 111 government institutions, 81 international NGOs and 785 national NGOs as well as 35 affiliate members. The congress was attended by more than 8,000 participants from 177 countries: therefore, it has been the biggest ever nature conservation event worldwide. The congress consisted from two parts, from the Forum and Members’ Assembly. Addressing the global most pressing sustainable development challenges, the Forum offered four days of in total 800 debates, roundtables, workshops, dialogues, presentations, exhibitions and other events on the three streams (A new climate for change, Healthy environments– healthy people and Safeguarding the diversity of life). Ecosystem services, effects of the biofuels on nature, climate change, biodiversity and human well-being and protected area effectiveness were most often discussed at the Forum. During the Members’ Assembly, i.a., 136 motions were finally adopted, proposed by members. At the congress, significant conservation outputs, e,g., the 2008 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species or up-dated World Database on Protected Areas were launched. The authors critically assess the effectiveness and discuss the future format of such a conservation mega-event.
