The Czech Society for Ornithology (CSO), in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic, Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection of the Czech Republic, administrations of České Švýcarsko/Bohemian Switzerland, Podyjí/Thaya River Basin and Šumava/Bohemian Forest National Parks, the Army Forests and Farms of the Czech Republic, Czech Union for Nature Conservation and Fauna of the Czech Republic has declared the White-throated Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) as the Bird of the Year 2009. In the Czech Republic, the White-throated Dipper population is estimated at 1,000 – 2,000 pairs only. The main threats to dippers include important changes in nesting and feeding habitats, particularly stream canalization and water pollution by various contaminants including acidification. Therefore, maintaining diverse habitats as natural as possible, both in riparian and water environment, and erecting nest-boxes at suitable sites can help the interesting bird species to successfully survive in the current landscape.
