The Black-headed Gull was declared as the Bird of the Year 2008

In 2008, the Czech Society for Ornithology (CSO), in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic, Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection of the Czech Republic, some regional authorities, the Czech Union of Nature Conservationists, Fauna of the Czech Republic and the Czech-Moravian Union of Gamekeepers has declared the Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibindus) as the Bird of the Year. Since the late 1980s, the Black-headed Gull population has declined by 35 % in the Czech Republic, the whole population being currently estimated at 50,000–100,000 breeding pairs. It is generally believed that the main drivers of the decline are habitat, i.e. wetland destruction and loss and contamination by various pollutants.
