In border mountains in the Czech Republic, holiday skiing in all its forms has had more than 120-year-old tradition and it has substantially contributed to dramatic changes in the landscape. It is followed by affects mostly related to building skiing resorts and their settings, e.g. deforestation, enormous water abstraction from mountain streams for producing artificial snow for downhill runs and ski slopes, artificial lighting and grassing downhill courses or building cableways, highly intense noise pollution threatening rare wild animal populations or damaging valuable habitats of endangered and rare wild plant species as well as often meaningless building of luxury apartment complexes. At present, State Nature Conservancy authorities have to seek for compromising solutions between the pressures from developers to enlarge skiing resorts and justified and legitimate interests of nature conservation and landscape protection. The article presents experience of the State Nature Conservancy staff members from various parts of the Czech Republic, namely from Beskydy/Beskids Mts., Jizera Mts. and Jeseníky Mts.
